HMS Royal Oak was one of the five Revenge class battleships built for the British Royal Navy during World War I. The ship started construction on January 15, 1914, was launched on November 17 of the same year, and was completed on May 1, 1916. Completed and served in the same year, and participated in the Battle of Jutland.
In 1928,HMS Royal Oak caught the attention of the world when its senior officers were tried by a controversial military court, causing considerable embarrassment to the Royal Navy at the time. During her 25 year service career, despite multiple modernization upgrades, her slow sailing problem could not be solved, and by the beginning of World War II, she was no longer suitable for frontline work.
On October 14, 1939, HMS Royal Oak temporarily anchored in Scapa Flow, Orkney, Scotland as a floating battery and was sunk by a torpedo from the German submarine U-47.

Le HMS Royal Oak était l'un des cinq cuirassés de classe Revenge construits pour la Royal Navy britannique pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. Sa construction a débuté le 15 janvier 1914, il a été lancé le 17 novembre de la même année et achevé le 1er mai 1916. Il a été mis en service la même année et a participé à la bataille du Jutland.
En 1928, le HMS Royal Oak fit la une des journaux internationaux lorsque ses officiers supérieurs furent jugés par un tribunal militaire controversé, causant un embarras considérable à la Royal Navy. Durant ses 25 années de service, malgré de multiples modernisations, son problème de lenteur à la navigation demeura entier et, au début de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, elle n'était plus apte au combat en première ligne.
Le 14 octobre 1939, le HMS Royal Oak, ancré temporairement à Scapa Flow, dans les Orcades (Écosse), servit de batterie flottante et fut coulé par une torpille du sous-marin allemand U-47.
