The Mini was conceived by designer Sir Alec Issigonis. In 1959, the British Motor Company launched two versions of the Mini under its Morris and Austin brands – the Morris Mini Minor and the Austin Seven. The Mini's paradoxical strength was its spaciousness. Despite its 3-meter-long body, the Mini could comfortably accommodate four adults with room to spare. This was made possible by its two-box design and compact mechanicals, with the transmission and gearbox mounted at the base of the engine. Four-wheel independent suspension and 10-inch diameter wheels lowered the ride height and ensured excellent handling. The Mini's popularity grew rapidly, and the Mk.II and Mk.III versions soon followed. In 1961, the renowned John Cooper tuned the engine and offered the Morris Mini Cooper to the public. Later came the Mini Cooper S, prepared for racing and rallying. The Mini Cooper 1275S Mk.I with its 1275cc engine appeared in 1964. Before that, the 1071S competed in the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally against many more powerful cars. It compensated for this disadvantage with its handling and took the victory. The 1275S then went on to win the 1965 and 1967 editions of this prestigious rally. Both Morris and Austin versions of the Mini Cooper S were produced, differing only in their grilles and emblems. With a new version of the Mini announced in September 2000, the global popularity of the original Mini is stronger than ever.

C’est le designer Sir Alec Issigonis qui est à l’origine de la Mini. En 1959, la British Motor Company commercialisa deux versions de la Mini sous ses deux marques Morris et Austin – la Morris Mini Minor et l’Austin Seven. Le point fort paradoxal de la Mini était son habitabilité. Malgré sa carrosserie longue de 3 mètres, la Mini pouvait accueillir confortablement quatre adultes avec encore de la place libre. Cela était rendu possible par sa conception deux volumes et une mécanique compacte avec transmission et boîte de vitesse à la base du moteur. Une suspension à quatre roues indépendantes et des roues de 10 pouces de diamètre abaissaient la garde au sol et assuraient un comportement très sain. La popularité de la Mini grandit rapidement et bientôt suivirent les versions Mk.II et Mk.III. En 1961, le célèbre John Cooper gonfla le moteur et proposa au public la version Morris Mini Cooper. Plus tard apparut la Mini Cooper S préparée pour participer à des courses et rallyes. La Mini Cooper 1275S Mk.I à moteur 1.275cm3 apparut en 1964. Avant cela, la 1071S participa au Rallye de Monte Carlo 1964 opposée à de nombreuses voitures plus puissantes. Elle compensa ce handicap par sa maniabilité et remporta la victoire. Puis, la 1275S fut victorieuse des éditions 65 et 67 de ce rallye prestigieux. Les deux versions Morris et Austin de la Mini Cooper S furent produites, différant simplement par leurs calandres et emblèmes. Avec une nouvelle version de la Mini annoncée en septembre 2000, la popularité planétaire de la Mini original est plus forte que jamais.
