Richard Lee Petty, born July 2, 1937, in Level Cross, North Carolina, is an American racing driver who competed in the NASCAR Cup Series (formerly known as the Strictly Stock, Grand National, Winston, or Sprint Cup Series) from 1958 to 1992.
Winner of seven championships (1964, 1967, 1971, 1972, 1974, 1975, and 1979), he holds the NASCAR record for starts, wins, and pole positions.
He earned the nickname "The King" following his record-breaking 27 wins in the 1967 season, including ten consecutive victories. A seven-time Daytona 500 winner, the popular driver from the southern United States is a legendary figure in the sport and an inaugural inductee into its Hall of Fame. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1992.
