The Sd. Kfz. 140 Flakpanzer 38 “Gepard” self-propelled anti-aircraft vehicle was developed during World War II using the chassis of the Czechoslovak-designed light tank Panzer 38(t). Its primary purpose was to provide the Wehrmacht with an effective means of protecting armored units and moving columns against aerial attacks. The mechanical reliability and maneuverability offered by the 38(t) chassis served as the technical foundation for mounting a 20 mm Flak 38 anti-aircraft gun on a rotating, shielded platform to protect the crew. The main weapon was often utilized not only against aircraft but also in engaging fixed positions and supporting ground troops in close combat situations. Over time, the Gepard was progressively supplemented in the anti-aircraft role by other self-propelled systems with greater firepower, such as the Wirbelwind and the Ostwind.

Le véhicule antiaérien automoteur Sd. Kfz. 140 Flakpanzer 38 « Gepard » a été développé pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale à partir du châssis du char léger tchécoslovaque Panzer 38(t). Son objectif principal était de fournir à la Wehrmacht un moyen efficace de protéger les unités blindées et les colonnes mobiles contre les attaques aériennes. La fiabilité mécanique et la maniabilité du châssis du 38(t) ont servi de base technique au montage d'un canon antiaérien Flak 38 de 20 mm sur une plateforme rotative blindée afin de protéger l'équipage. L'arme principale était fréquemment utilisée non seulement contre les aéronefs, mais aussi pour engager des positions fixes et appuyer les troupes au sol lors de combats rapprochés. Au fil du temps, le Gepard a été progressivement complété dans son rôle antiaérien par d'autres systèmes automoteurs plus puissants, tels que le Wirbelwind et l'Ostwind.
