The German tank destroyer Sd.Kfz. 138 Marder III was developed for use by the German army based upon the chassis of the obsolete, but available, Czechoslovakian production light tank Panzer 38 (t). The modification involved the adoption, in an open structure protected by an inclined plate shield, of the effective PaK 40 75 mm anti-tank gun. The Marder III Ausf. H had the engine fitted in the rear of the vehicle and the weapon system in a central position, in order to ensure greater protection for the crew. In this configuration the Wehrmacht had a tank destroyer that was easy to produce and with firepower that could counteract  main battle tanks of the period. It entered production in 1942.

Le chasseur de chars allemand Sd.Kfz. 138 Marder III a été développé pour l'armée allemande sur la base du châssis du char léger tchécoslovaque Panzer 38 (t), obsolète mais toujours disponible. La modification consistait en l'adoption, dans une structure ouverte protégée par un bouclier incliné, du canon antichar efficace PaK 40 de 75 mm. Le Marder III Ausf. H disposait du moteur à l'arrière et du système d'armement en position centrale, afin d'assurer une meilleure protection à l'équipage. Dans cette configuration, la Wehrmacht disposait d'un chasseur de chars facile à produire et doté d'une puissance de feu capable de contrer les chars de combat principaux de l'époque. Sa production a débuté en 1942.
