The original Grumman AF Guardian version is from December 1945 (so just after the end of WWII).

This one of the latest version AF-3S called "Mad Boom".

The Grumman AF Guardian is the first purpose-built anti-submarine warfare (ASW) carrier-based aircraft to enter service with the United States Navy. It consisted of two airframe variants, one for detection gear, the other for weapons. The Guardian remained in service until August 1955, when it was replaced by the twin-engined Grumman S-2 Tracker. The Guardian was the largest single-engine piston-powered aircraft ever to see service.

Hunter/Killer variant similar to AF-2S with retractable MAD boom, 40 built.

Le Grumman AF Guardian est le premier avion embarqué spécifiquement conçu pour la lutte anti-sous-marine (ASM) à entrer en service dans l'US Navy. Il existait en deux versions : l'une équipée d'appareils de détection, l'autre d'armements. Le Guardian resta en service jusqu'en août 1955, date à laquelle il fut remplacé par le bimoteur Grumman S-2 Tracker. Le Guardian était le plus grand avion monomoteur à pistons jamais mis en service.

Version AF-3S : Version chasseur/tueur similaire à l'AF-2S, dotée d'une perche de détection d'obstacles rétractable (MAD), produite à 40 exemplaires.
