Ernst Udet distinguished himself during the First World War by achieving 62 aerial victories. He was not yet 20 years old when he scored his first victory on March 18, 1916. His third victory on December 24, 1916, achieved by shooting down a French Caudron G.4 reconnaissance aircraft, earned him the Iron Cross 1st Class. In 1917, he took command of the fighter squadron Jagdstaffel Nr 37 (Jasta 37). In March 1918, Manfred von Richthofen gave him command of Jasta 11, the ace squadron. By April, he had received Germany's highest decoration: the Pour le Mérite. After Richthofen's death in combat, Udet took command of Jasta 4.

Ernst Udet s'illustre pendant la Première Guerre mondiale en remportant 62 victoires aériennes. Il n'a pas 20 ans quand il obtient sa première victoire le 18 mars 1916. Sa troisième victoire le 24 décembre 1916, obtenue en abattant un Caudron G.4[1] français de reconnaissance, lui vaut la croix de fer de 1re classe. En 1917, il prend le commandement de l'escadrille de chasse Jagdstaffel Nr 37 (Jasta 37). En mars 1918, Manfred von Richthofen lui donne le commandement de la Jasta 11, l'escadrille des as. Dès avril, il reçoit la plus haute distinction allemande : la croix Pour le Mérite. Après la mort de Richthofen au combat, Udet prend le commandement de la Jasta 4.
