In the initial phase of the German invasion of the Soviet Union, the Marder II was deployed against the overwhelmingly superior Russian T-34 and KV-2 tanks.

By 1941, it had become clear that not only the Panzer III and IV, but also the 5cm Pak 38 anti-tank gun were no longer sufficiently effective. As a result, the 7.5cm Pak 40 was developed, capable of penetrating 130mm thick armor plates from a range of 1000m with a rate of fire of up to 14 rounds per minute.

The Marder II was fitted with the Pak 40 in an open fighting compartment, mounted on the chassis of the Panzer II.

Production began in mid-1942.

Lors de la phase initiale de l'invasion allemande de l'Union soviétique, le Marder II fut déployé contre les chars russes T-34 et KV-2, largement supérieurs.

Dès 1941, il devint évident que non seulement les Panzer III et IV, mais aussi le canon antichar Pak 38 de 5 cm étaient devenus inefficaces. En conséquence, le canon Pak 40 de 7,5 cm fut développé. Capable de perforer des plaques de blindage de 130 mm d'épaisseur à une distance de 1 000 m, il offrait une cadence de tir allant jusqu'à 14 coups par minute.

Le Marder II était équipé du Pak 40 dans un compartiment de combat ouvert, monté sur le châssis du Panzer II.
