Prevented by the Treaty of Versailles from possessing or manufacturing tanks or similarly designed armoured fighting vehicles, Germany skirted the treaty restrictions by producing 15 tank hulls without superstructures, turrets or armament. To spread production experience as far as possible, five companies had been selected in 1933 to produce three vehicles each. The official designation “Landwirtschaftlicher Schlepper”, helped disguise the fact that any type of tracked armoured vehicle was being manufactured.
Designed as a training vehicle, the turretless Krupp Traktor was not intended for combat. In the Spring of 1934, it was issued to the first two Panzer regiments, Kraftfahrlehrkommando Zossen und Ohrdruf to give the troops their first experience of driving a fully-tracked armoured vehicle. Krupp-Gruson-werk was awarded a contract to overhaul these 1.Serie/La.S. chassic and convert them into training vehicles by adding a rail.

Interdite par le traité de Versailles de posséder ou de fabriquer des chars ou des véhicules blindés de combat similaires, l'Allemagne contourna les restrictions du traité en produisant 15 châssis de chars sans superstructure, tourelle ni armement. Afin de diffuser au maximum l'expérience de production, cinq entreprises furent sélectionnées en 1933 pour produire chacune trois véhicules. La désignation officielle « Landwirtschaftlicher Schlepper » permit de dissimuler le fait qu'il s'agissait de la fabrication de tout type de véhicule blindé chenillé.
Conçu comme véhicule d'entraînement, le Krupp Traktor sans tourelle n'était pas destiné au combat. Au printemps 1934, il fut distribué aux deux premiers régiments de Panzers, les Kraftfahrlehrkommando Zossen et Ohrdruf, afin de permettre aux troupes de s'initier à la conduite d'un véhicule blindé chenillé. Krupp-Gruson-werk obtint le contrat de remise en état de ces 1.Serie/La.S. transformer le châssis en véhicule d'entraînement en y ajoutant un rail.
