The U.S. military decided to ask various companies to create a troops transport vehicle quickly available and convenient. In 1941, the GMC firm won and the production began. . The qualities of this vehicle were numerous: the use of a tarp to cover the cabin provided a real economy, compared to the use of sheet metal. Easily deployable, the GMC CCKW 353 could serve both as a troops transport vehicle, so as a medical evacuation vehicle, food and ammunition resupply vehicle. Sold around the world after the Second World War, the vehicle remained in service in many armies，some of the vehicles equip with the 40mm BOFORS,and working in France.

L'armée américaine a lancé un appel d'offres auprès de plusieurs entreprises afin de concevoir un véhicule de transport de troupes rapidement disponible et pratique. En 1941, GMC remporta le contrat et la production commença. Ce véhicule présentait de nombreux atouts : l'utilisation d'une bâche pour recouvrir la cabine permettait de réaliser d'importantes économies par rapport à l'emploi de tôle. Facile à déployer, le GMC CCKW 353 pouvait servir à la fois de véhicule de transport de troupes, d'ambulance et de véhicule de ravitaillement en vivres et en munitions. Commercialisé dans le monde entier après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il resta en service dans de nombreuses armées, certains exemplaires étant équipés du canon BOFORS de 40 mm et utilisés notamment en France.
