The ZiS-30 was one of a few hastily-designed armoured fighting vehicles created by Soviet industry shortly after the German invasion of 1941. In August 1941 Grabin's design bureau at the Gorky plant no. 92 mounted the 57 mm ZiS-2 gun onto the chassis of a Komsomolets artillery tractor. There were problems with availability of both the chassis and gun and only about a hundred were built.

Le ZiS-30 était l'un des rares véhicules blindés de combat conçus à la hâte par l'industrie soviétique peu après l'invasion allemande de 1941. En août 1941, le bureau d'études de Grabin, à l'usine n° 92 de Gorki, monta le canon ZiS-2 de 57 mm sur le châssis d'un tracteur d'artillerie Komsomolets. Des problèmes d'approvisionnement, tant pour le châssis que pour le canon, limitèrent la production à une centaine d'exemplaires seulement.
