The Soviet La-5 fighter was developed by the Lavochkin Design Bureau as a further development of the LaGG-3. Due to declining performance of production aircraft and a shortage of liquid-cooled engines, the aircraft was threatened with discontinuation. Thanks to the prompt work of the designers, the fighter was equipped with an M-82 air-cooled engine. The aircraft demonstrated excellent performance and entered production at Plant No. 21 in Gorky in the summer of 1942.
The aircraft entered service before the Battle of Stalingrad. During production, the design was regularly modified. Pilots highly praised the La-5, which allowed it to compete on equal terms with new German fighters

Le chasseur soviétique La-5 a été mis au point par le bureau d'études Lavotchkine comme une évolution du LaGG-3. En raison de la baisse des performances des appareils de série et d'une pénurie de moteurs à refroidissement liquide, le programme risquait d'être abandonné. Grâce à la réactivité des concepteurs, l'avion fut équipé d'un moteur M-82 à refroidissement par air. L'appareil fit preuve d'excellentes performances et entra en production à l'usine n° 21 de Gorki à l'été 1942.
Il entra en service avant la bataille de Stalingrad. Sa conception fut régulièrement modifiée au cours de la production. Les pilotes apprécièrent grandement le La-5, qui lui permit de rivaliser à armes égales avec les nouveaux chasseurs allemands.
