The Maybach HL 230 P45 was a water-cooled, four-stroke V12 gasoline engine developed by Maybach for heavy German tanks during World War II. It had a displacement of 23.1 liters and achieved a maximum output of 700 hp (515 kW) at 3,000 rpm. Fuel-air mixture preparation was handled by carburetors, and the two cylinder banks were arranged at a 60-degree angle to each other.
Starting in May 1943, it replaced the smaller HL 210 P45 in the Tiger I and was also used in the Sturmtiger. Its gray cast-iron cylinder block distinguished it from its predecessor, which had an aluminum block. The engine offered high power output within a compact space for its time, though it required regular maintenance and a high-performance cooling system. A related variant, the HL 230 P30, was used in vehicles such as the Panther and Tiger II.
